Windows Conference Series
The preservation and treatment of historic windows has been a focus of HPEF activities and initiatives since the organization was first established.
In 1986 HPEF co-sponsored the first national Window Conference and Exposition for Historic Buildings in Boston, Massachusetts, It was followed by a second conference a decade later in Washington, DC. They remain the largest events devoted specifically to the maintenance, repair, and preservation of historic windows.
HPEF has also co-sponsored two different historic window exhibits presented in Philadelphia, New York City, Washington, DC, and Albany, New York. These exhibits featured a variety of historic windows, shutters, screens, and hardware, both typical and exceptional, ranging from the handmade products of seventeenth century craftsmen to mass market units of the mid-twentieth century.
Additionally, HPEF organized three Historic Window Workshops. These two-day events provided an opportunity for small groups of preservation professionals to share and learn the latest practices for window conservation.
Specially-prepared handbooks have been developed for various window workshops and events. They include conference presentations, annotated bibliographies, and information on various federal preservation programs and standards. A table of contents and online ordering information for the Windows Rehabilitation Guide for Historic Buildings and the Window Handbook are available on the windows publication page.
